Pastoral Support System

“Students’ personal development and well-being, including their spiritual, moral, social and cultural education, are outstanding” – Ofsted 2009

We pride ourselves on the pastoral support system that we have in place here at Saint John Houghton Catholic Voluntary Academy. The relationships that exist between staff and students are excellent. The tutor system helps students to develop a sense of belonging and as the tutor stays with them throughout their five years, a real awareness of others can be established.

The role of the tutor is pivotal in the pastoral system. The school is divided into year groups, namely, years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11. Heads of year, led by the Director of Pastoral Care, and assisted by the Principal Year Leader, oversee the well being and progress of our students. The pastoral team is also supported by chaplaincy and the Learning Support Co-ordinator.

The Oasis Team is a friendship support group, involving students from year 10. They offer a listening ear to students who may find it difficult talking to a member of staff. Their role is to support and encourage students wherever possible.

Parents can approach the Director of Pastoral Care, or indeed any member of staff, for financial support in line with our Charging and Remissions Policy, should they wish their child to take part in a residential experience organised by the school. This will be dealt with both sensitively and in confidence.
